We realized that this was the type of Fjord we would continue to raise. They continued to help us choose top quality mares & stallions over the next 20 years."

Here is a summary of the benefits you receive from owning an Anvil's Acres Fjord Horse
People Oriented
When treated with respect and firmness, your Anvil's Fjord will be a companion who enjoys riding,
driving and being with YOU!!!
Economical
While living in Alberta, our vet told us one of the reasons our Fjord Horses where such easy keepers
and cheaper to feed than other horses was that their organs, such has heart, lungs, etc, where
similar in size to the large draft horses and therefore the Fjord was able to utilize their feed in an
efficient manner. This benefits you in the costs for hay, grain, supplements, etc. The Fjords literally eat
less than your average horse but aquire the same amount of energy from their feed.
All Around Horse
The Fjord can be used as a riding horse for trail, pleasure, Dressage, and eventing or as a driving
horse for pleasure, shows, CDE's, used for chores around the farm and many, many more activities!!!
Healthier
With proper diet, exercise and good health husbandry Fjords have less health issues such as colic,
flu, injuries, lameness, etc resulting in savings of vet fees for you as the new owner.
Easy Foaling
Making our living raising Norwegian Fjord Horses, our broodmare band was carefully chosen for
bloodlines with conformation that lent itself to quick conception rates and ease in foaling resulting in
most years we have a 100% conception rate and live foals. As a breeder of Anvil's Acres bloodlines,
this gives you an added advantage over mares that only foal every other year or have problems
conceiving.
Sound & Stronger Legs
We also choose bloodlines with the conformation to produce strong legs and hooves. Our Anvil's
Fjord Horses seldom need corrective shoeing for hoof and leg problems as a result of unsound legs
or breaking down of legs or hooves. Again a financial saving to the owner with fewer trips to the farrier
and longer working life for your fjord.
As a result of our Norwegian Fjord Horses being raised on a mountainside they grow up with higher
bone density, stronger legs and feet than horses raised in a confined area giving you a stronger,
more sure footed Fjord Horse with less leg and lameness problems and less chance of injury while
you enjoy riding and driving your Fjord.
Pre Conditioned
Our Fjord Horses achieve a higher fitness level quicker as a result of their running up and down the
hillside and developing strong heart and lungs while growing up. This means you spend less time
conditioning at home and more time out on the trails or competing with a fit horse. The Fjord Horses
that we condition to compete in CDE's often received comments about their fitness level after the
marathon and Orville's aggressive hazard driving. His requirement is that they need to drive as well in
the last hazard as they do in the first one.
Sure Footed
Running and growing up in the mountains also teaches our Fjord Horses to be balanced, watch
where they put there feet, how to handle themselves in different situations on different terrain at
various speeds. This balance makes a big difference once they start their driving and riding training.
They do not have to learn to balance themselves as well as a rider when starting their training. Again
this gives you an added advantage in time spent on working your Fjord Horse on basics.
The mountain terrain also teaches them that a grouse flying up, deer startling and running off, elk
coming through the property and all manners of other wildlife are normal occurrences and not scary
experiences. Our Fjord Horses have a wide range of experiences to draw on when taken away from
home for the first time and whenever away from home.
Used to Tactile Sensations
The various trees and bushes teach our Fjord Horses how to jump over downed logs that fall across
their favorite trails, branches slap at their belly and sides and legs as they graze or run through the
woods playing or on their way home for water. Again this saves time in training when they are used to
things touching, blowing and hitting different parts of their body and legs.
